Summer Season Concert Series - Philly Style: September 2nd

  The charismatic cult leader, Steve Austin, leads  bassist Ryan Jones (Wetnurse) and drummer Curran Reynolds (Wetnurse) in this present day's version of Today Is The Day. They have been one of the most unique and influential bands of the past 15 years.  Their brand of metal, noise, psychedelia, and rock have earned the band worldwide acclaim. They've toured the world with the likes of Motorhead, Melvins, Morbid Angel, Converge, Napalm Death, and Neurosis and has released eight studio albums on labels including Amphetamine Reptile, Relapse, and SuperNova. They are renowned for being proud noisemakers with brutal blues-rock and completely disfigures it with a noise-rock auteur, Austin, known as much for his off-kilter, damaging riffs and vocals as for his soaring David Gilmour leads.

  As a poet and performance artist, Ursula Rucker has enchanted critics and fans across the globe with her diverse repertoire, captivating vocals and accessible poetic verse. Critics have compared Ursula to celebrated writers like Sonia Sanchez and Nikki Giovanni. The Roots have called on her to proved their album, "Do You Want More?!!?!!," with a spoken word contribution to fit the bill. “The Unlocking”, which closed the album, introduced Ursula to the world of progressive hip-hop and led to subsequent invitations to close The Roots follow-up albums "Iladelph Halflife" and "Things Fall Apart." Ursula has brought her words to venues including Montreaux Jazz Festival, Winter Music Conference, Painted Bride Art Center, and World Café Live. She has toured with Jamaaladeen Tacuma, SYLK130, and 4 HERO in the United States and Europe.

  Their music is often described as a mix of different American music's blues, country, rock'n'roll, pop, folk and R&B and in each strand. Band leader, Dave Alvin insists on keeping up with "California Style" music. His favorite blues, for example, is the West Coast scene that coalesced around Big Joe Turner and T-Bone Walker after World War II. Dave's favorite country music is the Bakersfield Sound of Buck Owens and Merle Haggard. His favorite R&B is the South Central L.A. scene of Jesse Belvin, Johnny "Guitar" Watson, Richard Berry and the Calvanes. His favorite folk songwriters are the California heirs of Woody Guthrie's years there's Kate Wolf, Jim Ringer, Mary McCaslin, Rosalie Sorrels and Tom Russell. His favorite pop-rock songwriters are the chroniclers of California's collision of sun-tanned hopes and film-noir disappointments' Randy Newman, Tom Waits, Brian Wilson and Stan Ridgway. He'll be bringing his "West Coast" sounds to the east at the Philly pit stop.

  This up and coming Philly alternative hip hop band consists of Chidera "Chiddy" Anamege, a.k.a. Proto,and Noah Beresin, better known as Xaphoon Jones. At 19 years of age each, this duo met at Drexel University and composed a sound based on the fusion of hip hop and unique sample choices from alternative influences such as Radiohead, Sufjan Stevens, Passion Pit, and MGMT. The two have gained a following in the underground among music bloggers and local college students. Their first free mixtape, entitled "The Swelly Express," was debut on November 2009 and presented the story of the group's experiences trying to break into the music industry. As with most of their successes, the mixtape quickly gained popularity online and in January 2010 the group signed a record deal with EMI. Their first commercial single, "Opposite of Adults", which samples the Brooklyn group MGMT's 'Kids' was released on February 21, 2010 in the UK and reached number 12 on the UK Singles Chart. They have a studio album slated for release this month.

  This hardcore metal band from the Miami / Gainesville area of Florida are coming to tear a hole through the walls of Kung Fu Necktie. The 4 piece, grindcore band composed of David Smith - vocals, Rick Smith - drums, Jonathan Nunez - guitar and Eric Hernandez - bass create one of the most abrasive sounding bands ever and are bringing that sound to completely rock out the city.
