Summer Season Concert Series - Philly Style: June 15th

Johnny Brendas:  Headliner: Imelda May
Opening Act: April Mae & The June Bugs
  Doors: 7:30pm / Show: 8pm
  Tix:$12

Born in Dublin, Ireland, Imelda May is a unique vocal talent, one whose gift lies outside the normal order of pop culture time and trends. Inspired by the sounds of vocal jazz à la Billie Holiday and the sound and looks of rockabilly. Nominated in 2007 for an award as Best Burlesque Singer. Her official debut, Love Tattoo, featured her strong backing band comprised of players Dave Priseman, Darrel Higham, Al Gare, and Steve Rushton, was critically and commercially well received, leading to some high-profile live gigs, including hitting the road with Jools Holland.

North Star Bar:
  Headliner: Near
Opening Act: The Ne'Er Do Well / Drake City
  Doors: 7pm / Show: 8pm
  Tix:$7

Near’s distinctive blend of acoustic indie-rock and baroque pop is crafted by the musical talents of Michael Sherry (vocals, guitar), Timothy Pearson (vocals, piano), Kevin Finn (keyboard, guitar), and Ray Gallagher (percussion). Their sound is characterized by strong melodies laden with tight vocal harmonies and penetrating lyrics, backed by a unique blend of piano, acoustic guitar, and synthesizer that transcends the traditional boundaries of pop, and uses songs to explore not only relationships, but mythology, poetry, and literature. Near has recently begun to break into the Philly scene: booking gigs at venues such as The North Star Bar, and The Trocadero Theatre and is in the process of recording their debut album.

Trocadero:
  Headliner: Blitzen Trapper
  Opening Act: Moondoggies
  Doors: 7pm / Show: 8pm
  Tix:$15

This Portland, Oregon-based sextet are all about the twangy Deadhead jams, loose, do-it-yourself Pavement sprawl, muscular Lynyrd Skynyrd riffs, anachronistic synthesizer bursts, and scruffy Band melodies. You'll hear tunes from their recent album that has a rangy collection as thrilling for its stylistic alchemy as it is for its infectious good vibes. They don't need to try so many different approaches when they've found one that works so well, though they have more clearly defined their shambolic Americana, they show great range and unpredictability with their songwriting. Super good!

World Live Cafe:
  Headliner: Tift Merritt

  Opening Act: Jason Collett
  Doors: 6pm / Show: 7:30pm
  Tix:$21 and $26

In town to promote her most visceral work to date, See You On the Moon. Tift Merritt focuses on creative musical short stories to make a really direct record that takes everything to a place that was less labored, of more depth with open space and real strength. In her nascent career, Tift Merritt has already produced an impressive body of work and earned a passionate, dedicated audience. Her live performances, both with her band and on her own, are similarly riveting.
