Summer Season Concert Series - Philly Style: June 2nd

First Unitarian Church:
  Headliner: Futurheads
  Opening Act: The Like
  Doors: 7:30pm / Show: 8pm
  Tix:$13 - $14

Taking the best of post-punk, new wave, and pop as inspiration, UK's Futureheads are among the best of the british "angular" movement. The band began as a trio of vocalist/guitarist Barry Hyde, bassist Jaff, and drummer Pete Brewis. The rest of the Futureheads' lineup also includes vocalist/guitarist Ross Millard and Hyde's little brother Dave, who eventually took over drums duty from Brewis. They've done gigantic stadium tours supporting the likes of Foo Fighters, Oasis, and Pixies, though they prefer to play smaller more intimate spaces. Their new album came out June 1st.

Johnny Brenda's:

  Headliner: Blue Rodeo
  Opening Act:  Cuff the Duke
  Doors: 7pm / Show: 8pm
  Tix:$20
Canada's most popular roots rock band, Blue Rodeo, became a veritable institution in their home country, although they never quite moved beyond cult status in the U.S. Their sound is a basic blend of country, folk, and rock, but with a definite pop appeal that underlines their devotion to later-period Beatles. Consistency is the hallmark of Blue Rodeo's output, both in terms of sound and quality (thanks to the songwriting team of vocalists/guitarists Jim Cuddy and Greg Keelor).

The Khyber:

  Headliner: Octopus For Yes
Opening Act:  Papyrus Like You / Galaxies / Jesus' Older Brother / Born Pilot

  Doors: 7pm / Show: 8pm
  Tix:$8

4 young lads from Pennsylvania on a journey to melt brains and teach the world Octopanese. Jonathan Buscema (aka Guy McFace) and Zachariah Holliday (formerly of The Vida Ambit) began the created this rock group and recruited Dan Townsend and bassist Austen Royce Goodman (formerly of Dead Man's Hand) via an epic jam at a party in West Chester. The four converged on Philadelphia to form a rock hard guitar with no rules and no shame!!

North Star Bar:

  Headliner: 28 North
Opening Act:  Flux Capacitor / Alabaster Brown / Ryan Wickersham
  Doors: 7pm / Show: 8pm
  Tix:$8

These guys' songs have a kind of honesty and edge to them that slices through the mass of overproduced fluff dominating the rock world today. They balance crushing riffs, with slinky funk, and hooks and choruses guaranteed not to leave your head... you may end up humming a tune or two.  Whether its their high energy electric show or their magical acoustic show, listen and you'll hear one of the most promising bands around.
