Summer Season Concert Series - Philly Style: August 5th

Kung Fu Necktie:
  Headliner: Three Bad Jacks
  Opening Act: Soul Reapin' 3
  Doors: 7pm / Show: 7:30pm
  Tickets: $10

The Three Bad Jacks claim to be the bastard sons of rock and roll greats like Elvis Presley, Joe Strummer and Joey Ramone. They fuse the best parts of rockabilly, rock and roll, and punk. Their songs showcase the band's ability to write timeless lyrics such as "It's Forever" which still remains one of their most requested songs at gigs. Elvis' vocals effortlessly launch from hardhitting howling to unparalled crooning all the while wailing away with guitar licks that would do Link Wray proud. Bassist Dave Eckles pounds the upright with force and precision that lays down the driving drum style of new addition Kyle Helm as he pounds the beat. The Jacks' new release is set to redefine what high energy rock and roll music is all about. The album captures the intensity, power, and soulful songwriting that made their debut field so successful but takes it to a higher level of maturity that will catapult this band.

North Star Bar
  Headliner: Devon Allman's Honeytribe
  Opening Act: Kickin' Bear
  Doors: 7pm / Show: 8pm
  Tickets: $15

Allman's Honeytribe is a band described as "having absolutely no slack and who conjure up moments of real inspiration".  They strike the perfect balance between their own material and occasional dabble with covers from the past. The most important thing to stress is that this is a band rather than a name with hired hands. Honeytribe are a unit who thrive on pushing their musical parameters when the moment presents itself, and last night was such a moment. An expectant audience from all parts of the globe probably did come in to check out the kid with the famous name. But what we actually got was a superb band who stand and fall by their own efforts.

Johnny Brendas
  Headliner: Fol Chen
Opening Act: Baths / Virtual Virgins
  Doors: 8pm / Show: 9pm
  Tickets: $10
Promoting their second album, this Highland Park sextet presents "Part II: The New December". The album boasts songs of malaise and mis-communications. Its set to dark pop and glitch-riddled chamber funk sound. Since the band's inception, Fol Chen has remained a mysterious entity - its membership disguised by masks and aliases, its lyrics appearing as transmissions from a fictional world. The group's real-life story has grown in tangible ways. Their debut last year, "Part I: John Shade, Your Fortune's Made," spawned some healthy praise, a remix album (featuring No Kids and Junior Vasquez, among others), a BBC session, and a video collaboration with the Laker Girls. It also paved the way for a pair of uniquely inspired covers: Prince's "The Beautiful Ones" (recorded for Spin) and Pink Floyd's "In The Flesh" (for Mojo). Fol Chen's shows consist of bent, blackened takes on the pop eccentrics of yore that  provides fresh context for its own kaleidoscopic songs, and The New December shores up the group's slippery identity further still. This is Fol Chen's most focused work - as consistent as it is consuming, as enjoyable as it is unusual.

Talk about BLOWIN' UP, this American rock band has done that with their hit single and radiofriendly sounds. However, it wasn't in the overnight style as they've been around for a while. Hailing from Nashville, Tennessee, the band consist of brothers Anthony Caleb Followill - vocals and guitars, Ivan Nathan Followill - drums and backing vocals, Michael Jared Followill - bass and backing vocals and their cousin Cameron Matthew Followill - lead guitar and backing vocals. Their earlier sound was an upbeat blend of southern rock and blues influences. Throughout the years, they gradually expanded their sound to include a variety of genres and a more alternative rock with some arena rock sounds for some great sounding shows. They bring their Grammy winning sound with some promise to present new material to their fans  from their upcoming fifth album that is tentatively called "Come Around Sundown".
