After the breakup of the A’s (a high profile 80’s band from the Philadelphia area) singer Richard Bush approached writer and artist AJay McLaughlin whom he had known from the pre-A’s scene to see if they couldn’t put together a few tunes meshed in rock, pop, folk, avant-garde, east coast, west coast, British invasion, Americana, psychedelic , Hi-fi, Lo-fi, rat pack, etc , etc, etc. Now, the pair established a litany of rules that they could break in compelling ways resulting in a catalog of songs both literate and melodic. Their songs have the potential to rock like hell.

Athlete was yet another Oasis-styled outfit from South London. Initially modeling their sound after that of the famed Gallagher brother in early 2000. Athlete eventually transformed itself into an experimental indie rock act, however, and the band's self-titled EP was a quick hit, garnering airplay on BBC Radio 1 and paving the way for another single, "You Got the Style," which cracked the Top 40 in June. Parlophone took notice and promptly signed the musicians, to record their first studio LP. Vehicles & Animals marked the band's major-label debut in April 2003, eventually spinning off four singles and garnering the band a prestigious nomination for the Mercury Music Prize. Athlete's sophomore effort, Tourist, was an even bigger success. Displaying similarities to Coldplay's reflective songwriting, the album rose to the top of the U.K. albums chart upon its release in 2005, with "Wires" peaking at number four and the follow-up single, "Half Light," reaching number 16. They rarely make it to town, but when they do...its an event. GET IN!!

This six-man ensemble is a breathe of fresh air. Especially with much of today’s contemporary music lacking a lot of personalized panache, it’s refreshing when young musicians band together to not only produce sounds with style and staying power, but original compositions with classic flair.

This singer/songwriter spent her childhood out of the country. Her songs give you that sense from the way her music sounds to what she writes about. Her soulful blues gives you that feel of the hay days of music. Her up and coming status would never have been a topic of discussion. If not for her age or lack of multiple albums, you'd think her sultry voice had been in the industry for at least 20 years. Good thing for us, she has her whole life ahead of her.
