Summer Season Concert Series - Philly Style: July 1st

The Khyber:
  Headliner: The Shackeltons
Opening Act: Shutters / Scot Sax & Queen Electric / Winston's Dog
  Doors: 8pm / Show: 9pm

The Shackeltons have amazed and inspired audiences with their artistry and story of lost love and new hope. Imagine a band -- A band that exudes musical creativity and power by using elements to convey a grand story. A story of a man whose heart and body is breaking. His love is lost in the Great Chicago Fire, and he's longing to have her back in his arms even if it means running through the smoldering avenues and alleys where he and his dearest once shared their love. Now imagine a stage strung with a warm glow of white Christmas lights, littered with flowers of all kinds. The Shackeltons are dressed in uniforms once worn by men fighting wars with guns and grenades, but they are fighting a different battle. This battle is not to destroy, but to rebuild. Rebuild that which has been destroyed in everyone: hope, love, compassion, and optimism. A MUST SEE and HEAR

They write songs that are instantly accessible to a listener without any dilution of heart or lack of hard cutting edge. North Star Bar:

Opening Act: TV TV / Menya
  Doors: 7pm / Show: 8pm
  Tix:$10

This group knows how to throw a party—and it's not one you're going to forget the next day. Funk, pop, rock, blue-eyed soul, hip-hop, new wave, and electro all converge to create a genre-bending sound that's completely unique, instantly relatable, and practically begging to be danced to. These six 20-something guys—singer Marc Griffin, emcee Tyler Cordy, guitarist Matt Reagan, keyboard player Dave Dalton, drummer Ian O'Neill and bassist Matt Warshauer, AKA “Sauce”—bring a diverse array of influences to the table (Jay Z to the Beatles, Duran Duran to the Beastie Boys, Stevie Wonder to The Strokes), effortlessly synthesizing the very best of all that has come before them to create music that is resoundingly modern.

World Cafe Live:
  Headliner: Adrian Belew
  Opening Act: Julie Slick
  Doors: 6:30pm / Show: 8pm
  Tix:$32, $42

"Painting with Guitar" is the latest live offering to compliment the rockin' Power Trio. It's a one-man show, but a very different one-man show. When most people think 'one-man show' they think a guy with acoustic guitar sits quietly and sings his songs. This is anything but that. Although he will sing some of his personal favorites, this is an electric guitar feast demonstrating the latest technology he's been working with and the new music it is helping create. The effect has been electrifying on his creative juices. Adrian has been writing material it would have been impossible to create only last year. During shows, he plays some new pieces and improvises over live loops he creates. He is doing some of his most fiery guitar work in his shows. To personalize things Adrian will answer questions from the audience. People love to talk about gear, past musical associations, the creative process, and many other subjects. The results are part illumination, part humorous, in fact Adrian has been careful to present a brand new more personalized show which highlights music not normally played with King Crimson or the Power Trio. Painting with Guitar is a new, personal, up-close, improvised multi-media presentation of the best state-of-art music Adrian has to offer. It would be a shame to hear about it later when you could witness it in person now.

Susquehanna Bank Center:
  Headliner: Dave Matthews Band
  Opening Act: Martin Sexton
  Doors: 7pm / Show: 8pm
  Tix: SOLD OUT!!

Part of the appeal of a Dave Matthews Band concert for 2010 is the setting - massive amounts of people in a Woodstock atmosphere. Matthews and his band gets things off to a slow, mellow start and later seems to liven up. Former bartender Matthews, applies his sing-song, Peter Gabriel-like vocals to good effect, sometimes yammering away. There will be plenty of solos, with Tinsley and Reynolds waxing virtuosic; while Beauford, Coffin and Ross promise to be excessive. DMB are at their best when they rock out, which will be about half the time, on songs like Why I Am, You and Me, Gravedigger, Warehouse and Grey Street. What else can be said that has not been said already?
